Exhibitions

My exhibitions take three main forms.

  • The first are those that are linked to a project and respond to a brief, which is usually set by the client. Most briefs have a least some set parameters and often indicate a minimum number of pieces required.

The space, date, and duration of these exhibitions are almost always set in advance creating a deadline to work to.

  • The second is those that are driven by me and my current fascination. With these exhibitions, the work usually comes first. I create a series or body of work and then look for a space in which to exhibit it.

  • In recent years digital exhibitions have been very popular and more easily achievable due to technological improvements. Although my experience has been limited here, I like this modern approach as it feels fresh, more accessible, and less stuffy.

Diversity Festival - Augmented Reality

Available online - September 2022

As part of the Diversity Festival 19 artists joined in an augmented reality exhibition that celebrated the range and scope of South Yorkshire Artists. I enjoyed the mixture of skills highlighted in the exhibition, feeling it displayed true diversity in a modern accessible format.

My contribution was five pieces of work demonstrating a range of mixed media methods. Those chosen attempted not only to highlight a range of techniques but also my connection to South Yorkshire, its monuments, vistas, and people.

Symbiosis - The Art of Living with Water

Priory Walk, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN1 1TQ - August 2022 - February 2023

This joint project was undertaken by nine artists and involved several months of collaboration, conversation, and information exchange between the artists in residence, conservationists, ecologists, professionals within the fields of water management, and the general public.

The programme established a Research Lab and Production Space to explore the nexus of arts and ecology. Culminating in the creation of a vibrant, interactive public space in the heart of Doncaster where residents, communities, and organisations could work together to generate ideas and create art that inspires action to address global change and raise social awareness. In-depth studies and research led to an intimate connection to the river system through Rotherham & Doncaster.

After together examining the effects of climate change, social ownership, and introduced species. Artists responded to their new knowledge and connection in varied and deep-seated ways. My contribution to the exhibition was five pieces of mixed media work named “Beautiful Invaders”. These were created as a response to specific invasive species often viewed by the public as a beautiful addition along the river bank. Within the work, the loss of native flora and fauna caused by the combination of invasive species and climate change was also examined, along with the positive effect increased social ownership provides.

Outside

The Pillared Hall, Wentworth Woodhouse, Wentworth, Rotherham, South Yorkshire - March 2022 - April 2022

This ArtWorks-sponsored Exhibition was the first in a series of three held in the magnificent Pillared Hall at the stately home, Wentworth Woodhouse. The exhibition included work by four Yorkshire Artists in response to the title “Outside”. In my contribution, paper lithography, monoprint, acrylic paint, and eco-prints were combined to create a series of five large mixed-media pieces. The subject matter being the grounds and stable block of Wentworth Woodhouse.

The work was my attempt to display my emotional and nostalgic connection to the site. A much-visited place of both my youth and adulthood, that holds many happy memories.

An audio tour accompanied the exhibition.

Cabinets of Curiosity

The Test Space, Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, S65 2AA - March - May 2022

This exhibition was the final stage of a residency commissioned by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council as a response to the extensive collection of Clifton Park Museum. This collaboration brought together seven artists from South Yorkshire. Together they spent time examining often unseen items within this extensive collection and were granted a privileged insight into not only the items themselves but the history behind them and the maintenance that the collection requires. Each Artist then responded to their encounter. However, the shared experience resulted in a number of collaborations and cross-fertilisation of ideas.

My contribution was influenced by the extensive collection of Rockingham Pottery, and other more varied items including taxidermy and their connection to the house and grounds. This resulted in the creation of a pattern book, and mixed media painting among other items. Collaborations included one of the pattern designs being used in dance costumes.
